The three most important messages that I pass on to kids are:
1. Safety comes first.
2. Our oceans and beaches need their help and they can make a difference.
3. Reading and writing can open a whole world of possibilities.
Presentation Description
For grades k-3, we begin by reading My Surf Tricks and My Surf Lesson.(10 minutes)
We then speak in detail about ocean safety. (15 minutes)
The main point here is “To look before you leap” into the ocean.
We talk about rip currents, what they are, what to do to avoid them and how to deal with them if ever caught in one.
We speak about lulls, or the period in between waves, when the ocean appears to be calm.
The ocean and the beach are fun places, but we must always respect the ocean’s power.
Our next topic is the environment (20 minutes)
We cover the hydrologic cycle and how everyone can affect our environment by what they do with their trash. Whether up on the mountains, in the cities or on the beach, we all can make a difference.
I show a short video to the kids with stars like TONY HAWK teaching kids the importance of putting their garbage in the trashcans and not the streets since it will end up in the drains and eventually make their way down to the sea.
Finally, I let the kids ask any questions they may have.(5 minutes)
I usually bring surfing equipment as visual aids for kids. Surfboards, paddles, leashes, fins, sun block, etc…

"The ocean is such a big part of my life and I want my kids to have the same feeling. Getting them familiar with the ocean through a book is a great way to make that happen.
It’s the best thing ever, golden!"
